Shazar, Zalman

   Born in Mir, Belorussia, he studied at the Academy of Jewish Studies in St Petersburg. In 1907 he joined the Poale Zion and edited its publications. He was arrested by tsarist authorities and imprisoned for his Zionist activities. During World War I he edited Jüdische Rundschau and organized the labour movement in Germany. He migrated in 1924, and was an editor of the labour daily, Davar and later its editor-in-chief. He was a member of the Palestinian Jewish delegation to the 1947 United Nations General Assembly. He was elected to the Knesset and served as minister of education and culture. In 1963 he became president of Israel.
